Wear sensible shoes – an age thing
Posted by kathryn on June 7, 2010
I can’t believe it, me who’s been wearing stillettos, forever trying to increase my 5’2″ height and horror of horrors, I appear to have the beginnings of a bunion…
It’s d***ed painful, I know that! I just managed to get through my daughter’s
wedding wearing a beautiful pair of snakeskin LK Bennett’s (see image) in what were and still are a very comfortable pair of shoes BUT my left toe joint started throbbing and giving me incredible pain.
I’ve just looked this up and it says “A bony swelling at the base of the big toe” http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/bunion/Pages/Introduction.aspx. Yep, got it in one. It goes on to say… Common treatments:
- painkillers (!)
- bunion pads
- in severe cases, surgery
What it doesn’t give you is any advice on how to correct the problem if it’s only minor. And I consider my bunion is minor. The obvious choice is low or flat heeled shoes. Oh, no, I don’t do flatties…
Having started writing this a week or so ago, I needed to give my bunion a rest so did resort to flatties. If you get the right ones, they’re not bad, actually. I can’t stand those ones that are so flat you tip over backwards; I’m short enough as it is!
I found some foot exercises on this website http://www.drfoot.co.uk/Exercises_For_Bunions.htm and what it also said in bold was do not wear high heels. Try telling women that! I could also consider putting my toe in a ‘day splint’ but by the look of it I’d have to wear a pair of Dr Marten’s in order to accommodate the paraphenalia.
Oh, well. I’ll have to save wearing my high heels for very, very special days. My niece gets married later this week – so I don’t have long to wait!
